The story follows 11-year-old (played by Lise-Lotte Hjelm), who is sent to live with relatives in a small town. While struggling with loneliness and the feeling of being an outsider, she encounters Jon , an eccentric and often drunken elderly painter. Despite the townspeople’s distrust and fear of Jon, whom they view as nearly insane, Maria forms a deep and "strange friendship" with him.
The film is primarily based on the third book in a series by Swedish author Hans-Eric Hellberg. The character of the painter, Jon Ersson, is inspired by a real person: Johan Erik Olsson, who was known as "Lim-Johan." His original paintings were used in the film, adding a unique layer of authenticity.
